Research and planning: shot list

this is a picture of one of my class friends. it is an example of a mid-shot. I am going to be using one of these for my magazine.

This is another mid-shot of another member of my class.

shot types and angles that i am thinking of using in my magazine.

  • Long, wide shot to show the model as well as the background to show the genre and the location -front cover
  • Medium closeup to show the models facial expressions again to go with the genre of R'N'B, a bit of attitude is needed- contents page
  • Shots of the clothing are important for my magazine as this shows the genre of R'N'B a different way- contents page.

research and planning: location recces photos and videos of location with reasons why i am using them

This is a screen shot of my location. It is a tunnel next to Audenshaw primary . I have used this location as it is a quiet area, inside the tunnel there is a wall with lots of graffiti on it. This would be a perfect location as my genre is R'N'B and the graffiti theme is on other R'N'B magazines.

research and planning: costume and prop list

Costume and prop list

Costume:
• Front cover: Female Model with RnB style clothing on, this will connote that the magazine is for RnB fans just by looking at the front page even before they pick it up off the shelf.

  • On the contents page there will be a "fresh" picture of a model just stud very casual against a grafitti wall. This connotes that the teen model is very rebelious and the graffiti wall connotes that they have no care for anything. This model again will be wearing fashionable clothing worth quiet a bit of money to connote that the magazine isnt just for lower class people, even people with money can like RnB.
  • All of the costumes used within my magazine are all going to suit the genre of RnB.

Research and Planning: Analysis of contents page

As you can see from the contents page above, a bold image has been used which catches your eye a soon as you look at the page, from the picture you can automatically tell that the female has style, and accessories and that fashion plays a big part for her. The masthead is the biggest thing on the page which is also the magazines title, this also stands out and will be familiar to the audience. This contents page fits the genre of my magazine as it is R'n'B. I have used this magazine contents page to analyse as it has the same layout as mine, the contents list is on the left hand side of the page,

Research and Planning; analyses of double page spread

This double page spread fits the genre of an R'N'B magazine.

  • The title of the double page spread is the artists name. 'Jamelia' is a well known artist for this specific genre. The masthead is also the biggest thing on the page, not only does it tell you what the story is about it also tell your who it's about, and the image behind the masthead and to the left also shows you.
  • The image of Jamelia used is being modeled and shows she is quiet delicate, and cares about the way she looks, the fact that she has her legs out shows she is confident with her body and doesn't care what people think of her.
  • The colour scheme used is red, black and white. This is used throughout the double page spread, the red and black are typical colours for the R'N'B magazine and the white just breaks it up and gives a feminine touch.
  • The audience for this magazine would be male or female, probably the lower class, usually teenagers, students etc ranging from ages 15-18 years as these are the years that they will be going out and into the latest fashion, music looks etc.
  • The psycho graphics for the genre of this magazine would be a rich wealthy, healthy lifestyle, the interest's would be having a girlfriend or boyfriend, looking good, making sure you have the latest fashion and looks. The value on life you would have would be making sure your in with the latest look, make up, tan, etc.
  • The Socio-economic grouping for this genre of magazine you would be put in if you was just a fan of it would probably be D or E, however if you was one of the celebrities in this genre you would be in gouping A-B.

Research and planning: Masthead font ideas

Here are a few ideas of fonts for my masthead of my music magazine. I have chose this type of font as it fits my genre of magazine. I prefer the second font style as it looks like a disco ball sort of font with the bold circles, I also like the fourth masthead as this also fit my genre of R'N'B because its very clear, bold and the letters stand out like graffiti.

Research and planning: Target Audience for my magazine

The audience for my magazine would either be male or female, interested in this genre of music. The artists used as models are well known to the teenage years and both sex groups. The age of my audience would differ between 15 years and 19 years as these are the years that they will be going out most weekends and this music will be playing in the pubs/clubs they attend. Also teenagers are more into the latest music, having a boyfriend/girlfriend, the latest fashion etc. The socio-economic grouping for my audience for my magazine you would be put in if you was to read it would be probably D-E the working class however if you as a star in the magazine the socio-economic grouping would be A-B. From carrying out my questionnaire I now have the results for my magazine. The gender would be either male or female as both sex chose to read my genre of magazine however more males chose than females. The main story that will star in my magazine would be about new albums out as the same number of females chose it as males. My age range for my magazine would be 16-18 as these are the ages that my candidates picked for the genre of an R'N'B magazine.

The picture below would be a typical stereotype for the audience of my magazine.

I chose Cher Lloyd as she is 'in' with the latest fashion, she cares about the way she looks with her makeup and hair always done, she has a Paul's boutique bag which is also in with the latest fashion. Her mobile phone is also one of the new ones out.

research and planing: Analysis of R'N'B Magazine front covour

This magazine fits the genre of an R'N'B magazine.

  • The masthead of this magazine is bold and light blue which makes it stand out from the rest of the magazine. It also fits the colour scheme to the magazine as other parts of the cover are blue.
  • Another prop is the model on the front cover. Usher is a famous R'N'B artist and the medium close up shots represents that he is well known and very famous in this genre of music. The fact he is showing his wedding finger catches peoples eye as his fans will be interested in who he is marrying. His watch is also on show which connotes he has money and also the glasses he is wearing shows he has money. The way he is stud with his head tilted shows he has attitude and swagger.
  • The font used for the word 'swagger' looks as though it is spray painted on and the genre of R'N'B reflects on that because well known artists are seen as having a swagger instead of an attitude and if you have money, a big house etc then your known to have a swagger, also youths reflect the R'N'B genre in there life too, some will spray paint on walls etc.
  • The colours black and red also connote that the genre is R'N'B because the colour yellow is like the colour of money/gold, so could be a sign of how rich the are.
  • The audience for this genre of magazine would be either male or female interested in this genre of music and as Usher is well known to both sex groups. Age would preferably be around 15 to 18 years as these are the years younger people will be going out etc and into music, the music industry news etc, this is also the age that teenagers will be interested in the latest fashions, and having a girlfriend or a boyfriend.
  • The psycho graphics for the genre of this magazine would be a rich wealthy, healthy lifestyle, the interest's would be having a girlfriend, looking good, making sure you have the latest fashion and looks. the value on life you would have would be having a pretty girl under your arm, making sure you have lots of friends, usually just a typical teenage lifestyle.
  • The Socio-economic grouping for this genre of magazine you would be put in if you was just a fan of it would probably be D or E, however if you was one of the celebrities in this genre you would be in gouping A-B.

Research and Planning: Music magazine questionnaire results

From doing my questionnaire I have found out that my genre for my magazine is going to be R'N'B. The audience for my music magazine is going to be males aged between 16 and 18. The colours I am going to use are purple and pink as well as black and blue as these were the 2 favorites. 'New albums' was the story that the majority of my students that took my questionnaire chose to read about, this will be the story I am going to put on my double page spread.

This is the questionnaire I conducted to help me with the production of my magazine.

Research and Planning: preliminary task

Evaluation of my college magazine.

What worked well?

Whilst planning my college magazine I used photoshop to plan the front cover of the magazine. I used different ways and layouts to see which way works the best. Once I had planned the layout I wanted it was easy to go ahead and make the front cover of the magazine, deciding on the masthead was easy as it was a college magazine the first thing that comes in to your head is students so that was the header I went with. Deciding where to put the pictures and logos etc was also easy once I had my plan because I could go straight into it and know what I expected. The making of my contents page was on indesign. Indesign was more difficult to use than Photoshop but once got used to the tools i could easily create my contents page. Deciding on where to put things was also easy for the contents page as i tried to do a similar layout to the front cover so it had a scheme running through, this makes my magazine look more professional.

What did not work well?

Whilst making my magazine I found that a couple of things didn't work as well I expected them to. I found it difficult to use Indesign as I couldn't get the hang of the tools and the way to use them. Whilst putting my front cover together I found that the fonts I had used were too big and once printed they were cut off the paper so this made me go back and rearrange my front cover. I also found i had this problem with my contents page. Deciding on the stories to put in the magazine was also a hard task for me.

How well it meets its purpose.

My magazine meets its purpose as I have used other magazines to compare it to and see if it has the things needed to be a magazine. For example my magazine has a masthead, subline, a dominant image, small articles around the image etc. It also has a contents page with another dominant image and small images to show you what the stories are about.

What could you improve if you created it again.

If I was to create my magazine again I would use another color scheme throughout as it is a boring color and doesn't really stand out. I would also use a different font as mine is boring. I would use another picture on the front cover to make it look more like a student.

Research and planning: first draft of my magazine.

This is a plan of my first draft of my magazine.

research and Planning: Research into font styles.

These are different types of mastheads for imaginary magazines. 'Death metal' is in blood red were-beast font, the semiotics of this masthead is the blood red font and the drips on the masthead look as though the blood is dripping down. 'Pop world' is in a girly pink colour as the majority of the audience for pop magazines are the female gender. The font is budmo jiggler, which makes the masthead look like a disco ball. The last masthead is Popcorn, which is in a yellow simple font as this would be a film magazine aimed at a both genders. The font style is 'juice bold' which would stand out from background of the magazine. This is also a play on words because edible popcorn is also yellow and applies to everyone.

Research and Planning; semiotics research

Semiotics are the signs you use to study what things are and the category they fit under. For example, if you was to create a pop magazine and a rock magazine, the signs on the front cover will tell you the genre. It is the same for music, TV programs etc. Certain conventions must be used to create semiotics.

imgres.jpg This picture is a good example as it uses semiotics to tell you that each of the symbols have a meaning, it is important for you to look out for the semiotics.

imgres.jpg Another example of the semiotics on the front cover of this magazine are as follows: the model holding a violin tells us that it is a music magazine, also the masthead.

research and planning : Target audience for my college magazine.

The Target audience for my college magazine are :

  • Aged between  16 and 20 years old.
  • Any gender.
  • Interested in the latest fashion, college life, music, sports, timetable's, activities to attend whilst in college and also after college, places available to spend time when free, (e.g dinner time etc)  and where to buy food / refreshments.
  • Either straight from school having just studied their GCSE's, or from another college studying AS levels or any other vocational course.
  • Lower class to medium class people are the biggest target for my audience.

Research and planning : examples of medium close-ups

These are examples of medium Close - ups, i understand i have to use one for my magazine.

Research and planning : Analysis of college magazine.

  • The masthead of this magazine is in a bold and simple font, also the font style caters to younger people, which connotes it is for people in school / college, also it is a very american font which reminds me of 'High school musical'.
  • The stories on this magazine are also aimed at younger people, as one of them is called the campus food guide which is telling you what sort of food there are in paces like college / school, also the other stories apply to younger people, one of the stories is about style tips and what not to wear. the story called 'student stereotypes' connotes it is aimed at students as underneath is says 'what others are saying about you'.
  • The main picture is of 2 teenage student girls, which also catches the readers eye as it is aimed at people of the similar age. They are also wearing student style clothes.
  • There is a slug line on this magazine but we cannot see what it says.
  • There is no date on this magazine front cover and also no bar code or price.
  • There is also an 'inside this issue' box which catches the readers eye as it is a different colour to the background and catches the readers attention.

Research and planning:indesign and tutorial

This is my first time of using indesign. Whilst using this programme I created this document. I learnt how to:

  • Change the background colour by selecting the shape tool and drawing a rectangular box the same size as the page and then selecting a colour.
  • Use the text tool to create a title for my document, and change the size and shape of it.
  • Put my text into columns by creating guides for my text, I then selected my text by clicking 'place' and then going into my folder, it was then on my mouse so all I had to do was draw where i wanted the text (inside the guides I had drawn).
  • I then selected my picture by also using the 'place' button.
  • Put the number in the bottom corner of my document by using the text tool and then placed a border around that and my whole piece of work by making the boxes thicker.
  • Use the gradient effect tool to gradually make the background colour white.

Research and Planning: Introduction to Photoshop (skin correction tutorial)

This is the third one of the documents I created whilst using photoshop for the first time, whilst creating this one I learn how to use the skin correction tool, how to change the colour of the hair using another tool, how to change the colour of the background and also how to apply makeup to the person in the photo.

  • I used the brush tool to apply colour to the hair.
  • I used the skin correction tool to get rid of the marks on her face.
  • I used the brush to make the background blue.

Research and Planning: Introduction to Photoshop (Creating a document)

I did this document on the same day so this was also one of the first times I have used photoshop. Whilst creating this document  I learnt how to change the colour of the back ground, and also change the colour of the hair, however I learnt how to use and easier tool to change hair colour for next time I use photoshop.

  • I used the magic wand tool to apply the colour the hair.
  • I used the shape tool the cut out the picture if the girls face and apply it to my blue background.
  • I used the text tool to apply my text to the document and I used the drop shadow tool to create a drop shadow.

Research and Planning: Introduction to Photoshop (CD cover)

This is the first time I have used photoshop, using this programme I learnt how to cut out pictures from other documents and apply them to the background of the CD cover, I also learnt how to add text and how to do drop shadows on it. I also learnt how to change the colour of everything.

  • I used the magic wand tool to cut out the CD, and trumpet from other documents and applied them to my CD background.
  • I used the text tool to create my CD title and drop shadow.
  • I applied the pictures of the musical notes by adding a picture.

welcome
